When to contact a foreign university coach
The single most important step in the abroad route, and the one families start too late.

At US universities, athletic scholarship offers come from coaches, not admissions offices, and the athletes who get recruited initiate contact at least 18 months before intended enrollment. This decision therefore effectively has to be made at 16-17, not 18, if Class 12 is the target enrollment point.

Start outreach now, even with an incomplete shortlist; wait until the shortlist and recruitment video are fully ready and risk starting later than competitive applicants; or set the foreign route aside for this cycle and revisit it at a later transition point.
