What to spend when you can't afford the option your child wants
Several strong pathways are free or low cost, and most families who struggle never pursue them.
When it arrives
Arrives the moment a training option, equipment, travel or coaching fee exceeds what the family can comfortably pay, on no fixed schedule and often earlier than expected, since equipment and travel costs start well before elite-level training does.
The options
Pay for the preferred option by cutting back elsewhere; pursue a free or low-cost government route instead (a SAI training centre, the Khelo India scholarship, NIOS to remove school-fee pressure); delay the expensive option until a scheme becomes available; or scale back ambition to what's affordable now, without treating that as permanent.

SAI training centres, the Khelo India scholarship and NIOS are free or low cost, and this is documented. Not yet documented here: comparative costs for the paid alternatives (private academy fees, foreign coaching, travel budgets) that would let a family weigh 'free but different' against 'paid but preferred' in rupees. Adding them is one of the content gaps targeted after ~15 October 2026.
Talking about it
The hardest version of this conversation is the one with the child, where naming a financial limit risks landing as 'you're not worth the investment.' Pairing the constraint with a viable free alternative, in the same conversation, changes how it lands.
