What These Paths Pay: An Earnings Ladder

None of this section's other articles names a number. This one does, rung by rung, from a disclosed government pay matrix at the bottom through domestic coaching, IPL support staff and commentary fees to the reported, single-seat top of coaching the national team, separating disclosed fact from reported estimate at every level.

Five sport-adjacent-career articles, a route back into competitive play and a set of family and life-stage decisions, all sit in this section. None of them names an actual number. This article closes that gap, rung by rung, with one caveat that holds for the whole thing: only the government end of this ladder is an officially disclosed figure. Everything above it is reported by sports media, not published by the employer, and moves with a specific person’s own track record far more than with the job title alone.

Career After 25

The Earnings Ladder: One Disclosed Rung, the Rest Reported

National team head coach: reported

Roughly ₹6 crore–₹15 crore a year across recent tenures. One seat for the whole country.

Commentary: reported

Named commentators reported at about ₹30 lakh–₹57 lakh a series, and VVS Laxman at roughly ₹3.5 lakh a game. Built on a decade or more of broadcasting, not a starting rate.

IPL franchise support staff: reported

Roughly ₹25 lakh–₹60 lakh a year, strength and conditioning coaches among them.

Mid-career: reported

Ranji-level head coach: ₹10 lakh–₹25 lakh a year. Senior sports physiotherapist: ₹8 lakh–₹12 lakh a year.

SAI Assistant Coach: officially disclosed

Pay Level 6: ₹35,400–₹1,12,400 a month before allowances. In-hand starting pay commonly near ₹45,000–₹55,000 a month.

Grassroots and entry level: reported

Community or district academy coach, or entry-level sports physiotherapist: about ₹20,000–₹40,000 a month.

Only the government rung is an officially disclosed figure. Every other figure is reported by sports media, not published by the employer, and moves with the individual's record. Check SAI's own current recruitment notification for the live pay matrix.

Only the government rung is a fact rather than an estimate. Everything above and below it comes from media reporting.

The one disclosed rung: government coaching pay

A Sports Authority of India Assistant Coach post sits on Pay Level 6 of the 7th Central Pay Commission matrix, ₹35,400 to ₹1,12,400 a month before allowances. It is open to a candidate who holds NSNIS Patiala’s Diploma in Sports Coaching or an equivalent qualification. In-hand starting pay, once dearness and other allowances are added, commonly lands near ₹45,000 to ₹55,000 a month. Promotion runs Coach, Senior Coach, Chief Coach and High Performance Coach up the same disclosed government matrix. This is the one rung on this ladder that is a fact. Check SAI’s own current recruitment notification for the live figure before treating any number here as fixed. Coaching After Your Playing Career covers the route into that post.

Below it: grassroots and entry-level private work

A community or district-level private academy coach, or an entry-level sports physiotherapist working with a school or a small academy rather than a franchise, realistically sits closer to ₹20,000 to ₹40,000 a month in most markets. That is in line with the roughly ₹3 lakh to ₹5 lakh a year that general career-guidance sources put on a fresh sports-physiotherapy graduate before any franchise or national posting. This is the least visible rung on the whole ladder, precisely because almost nobody publishes it, and it is also the rung the article on building your own academy or business in this series starts from.

Mid-career: domestic teams and senior clinical roles

A Ranji Trophy-level team’s head coach is commonly reported to earn somewhere in the ₹10 lakh to ₹25 lakh a year range. A senior sports physiotherapist several years into that level of work moves into a comparable ₹8 lakh to ₹12 lakh a year bracket. Sports Science and Physiotherapy: Moving In Without a Fresh Degree covers how that route is entered. No state cricket association discloses this the way SAI’s pay matrix is disclosed. Both figures are the kind of range repeated across career-guidance and sports-recruitment reporting without a single named contract behind them.

The franchise tier

Specialist support staff at an IPL franchise, strength and conditioning coaches among them, are reported to sit in a roughly ₹25 lakh to ₹60 lakh a year band. Franchises publish a head coach’s arrangement far more often than a support-staff member’s, so this range comes from sports-business reporting rather than a released contract. For most people working full-time in a sport-adjacent career, this is the highest rung actually within reach.

Media: what commentary has been reported to pay

Named, reported figures give the clearest picture available on this route. For example:

  • Ravi Shastri and Sunil Gavaskar, each close to ₹57 lakh for a series
  • Sanjay Manjrekar, around ₹42 lakh
  • Harsha Bhogle and Anil Kumble, around ₹32 lakh
  • Aakash Chopra, around ₹30 lakh
  • VVS Laxman, roughly ₹3.5 lakh a game

More recent reporting around a 2026 series put single-day fees for Irfan Pathan, Sunil Gavaskar and Dinesh Karthik at ₹6 lakh to ₹7 lakh and Navjot Singh Sidhu at ₹15 lakh. These are fees built on a decade or more of broadcasting work, the same point this series’ article on commentary and media careers makes through Harsha Bhogle’s own case, not a starting rate for someone new to the booth.

The rare top: coaching the national team

The very top of this ladder is a single seat, not a career tier. BCCI’s men’s team head coach has been reported to earn somewhere between roughly ₹6 crore and ₹15 crore a year across recent tenures, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Ravi Shastri and Anil Kumble among them. None of these figures is officially released by BCCI, but they are consistent across several years of sports-media reporting. It is real money, attached to one job, for the entire country, at a time.

What this ladder says

Every rung above the government pay matrix is reported rather than disclosed, and depends on the specific person’s own record more than on the job title. That is worth sitting with, because it is closer to how most private-sector and freelance careers work anywhere:

  • a published entry grade at the bottom
  • a wide and undocumented middle
  • a small, headline-grabbing top end that is not what most people in the field actually earn

The ladder does not price administration or scouting work: Sports Administration, Federations, Scouting and Event Management covers what those jobs are, and Sports Management as a Career in India covers what management roles pay.

What to do this week

  1. If a government coaching route is realistic for you, check SAI's own current recruitment notification for the live pay-matrix figure rather than trusting any number in this article beyond its publish date.
  2. Treat every franchise, commentary or head-coach figure here as a reported range to verify separately once a real decision depends on it.
  3. Plan around the middle of this ladder, not the top rung. Most sport-adjacent careers, coaching, physiotherapy, administration and media alike, sit closer to the entry and domestic tiers than to the crore-level headline.
