  • The central lane (a line of cones or chalk)
  • Two poles (bottles)

Warm up · 3 minutes

Show it · 1 minute
  1. Mark a short lane with a post at each end and 5 or 6 squares.
  2. Crouch the chasers in the squares, facing alternate ways.
  3. Walk through a chase: the chaser runs one way, gives kho, and the new chaser carries on.

Show it once from the front and once from the side, slowly. Then let your child try.

The skill · 10 minutes
  1. 5 or 6 chasers crouched in a short lane; 2 runners.
  2. Chase low, tag lightly.
  3. Pass the chase with "kho".
  4. Swap after 3 minutes.

How much: 2 turns each of 3 minutes

Short-lane kho-kho

The rules

Each team chases for 3 minutes; a point for every runner tagged.

  1. One team crouches in the lane; one chaser stands at a post
  2. The other team sends in 2 runners; when both are out, 2 more come in
  3. After 3 minutes, the teams swap
  4. Each team chases twice

Fair play: A team with a grown-up chaser must give kho every 10 seconds.

Points
1 point to the chasing team for each runner tagged.
Fouls
The tag does not count, and the runner stays in: a push when tagging or giving kho; the chaser crossing the lane or turning back between the posts; the sitter rising before the kho
Win
More points after each team has chased twice.
