Is the space marked?
- The midline
- A baulk line
- Four shapes on the floor
- A start line for the shuttle
A court split into two halves by a midline, with a baulk line in each half; teams of 4 to 7.
Three minutes to get warm.
Easy jogging on the spot, then arms and legs. How to warm up well is explained at workonfitness.com.
- Walk the court: the midline, the baulk lines and the edges.
- Take a breath and walk a raid chanting "kabaddi, kabaddi" without stopping.
- Cross the baulk line, tag a defender's arm low and walk back over the midline, still chanting.
Show it once from the front and once from the side, slowly. Then let your child try.
- Teams send one raider at a time into the other half.
- The raider chants "kabaddi" without a break.
- Cross the baulk line, tag a defender with a quick low hand or foot.
- Sprint back over the midline.
- Defenders pull a bib or tag instead of holding; a raid lasts at most 30 seconds.
How much: 2 halves of 6 minutes
Keep the sound going, then return
Touch kabaddi
The rules
Teams take turns to raid; a raider who forgets to chant loses the raid.
- Toss to choose who raids first; then the teams take turns
- The raider crosses the baulk line, tags as many defenders as possible and gets back over the midline
- Defenders try to tag the raider's back or pull a tucked bib before they get back
- Tagged defenders are out and sit at the side; they come back in, one for each point their team scores
Fair play: A team with a grown-up raids with walking steps only.
- Points
- The raiding team scores 1 point for each defender tagged when the raider gets back; the defending team scores 1 point if they tag the raider first.
- Fouls
- The raid ends and the other team scores 1 point: the raider stops chanting or takes a breath; holding, pushing or grabbing clothes; stepping outside the court
- Win
- More points after two halves.
- 3
- 6
- 10
Each child raids twice in a 15-minute game and chants through both.
End on one that works. If it was hard today, finish with the easier version.
Well played.
