Setup · 1 minute

Is the space marked?

  • The throwing line
  • Two cones 10 strides apart
  • End zones

A disc; cones.

Warm up · 3 minutes

Three minutes to get warm.

Easy jogging on the spot, then arms and legs. How to warm up well is explained at workonfitness.com.

3:00
Show it · 1 minute
  1. Marker: stand an arm's length from the thrower, hands low, knees bent, and count "stalling 1, 2, 3" aloud.
  2. Thrower: keep one foot still, fake one way, then pivot the other way and throw.
  3. Receiver: take two steps away, plant a foot and sprint into the empty space to catch.

Show it once from the front and once from the side, slowly. Then let your child try.

The skill · 10 minutes
  1. The thrower fakes and pivots on one foot to get a throw past the marker to a standing team-mate.
  2. The marker shuffles, never lunges, and counts aloud to ten.
  3. Swap after five tries.
  4. Cutting: a step or two away, plant and sprint into the space to receive.

How much: 5 tries each role

Shuffle, do not lunge

Square score

The rules

A point for every pass caught inside a small square of cones.

  1. Mark a 3 m square of cones 8 m from the thrower
  2. The receiver starts outside the square and cuts into it
  3. The thrower passes past the marker before the count reaches 10
  4. 5 tries, then rotate roles

Fair play: A grown-up marker keeps both hands behind the back.

Points
The thrower and receiver score 1 point for a catch inside the square; the marker scores 1 point for a touched disc or a stall.
Fouls
A point to the other side: the pivot foot moves; the marker touches the thrower or lunges; the marker counts faster than one a second
Win
The most points after everyone has had each role.
