Setup · 1 minute

Is the space marked?

  • The board's outline on the mat (tape)
  • The foot positions
  • At the beach, the flags

A drawing of a wave and surfers, or a surf video, or the beach.

Warm up · 3 minutes

Three minutes to get warm.

Easy jogging on the spot, then arms and legs. How to warm up well is explained at workonfitness.com.

Show it · 1 minute
  1. Draw a wave and mark the peak, where it starts to break.
  2. Draw two surfers; point to the one nearest the peak: that surfer has the wave.
  3. Draw a third surfer taking off in front: that is a drop-in, not allowed.

Show it once from the front and once from the side, slowly. Then let your child try.

The skill · 10 minutes
  1. The surfer nearest the peak has the wave.
  2. No dropping in.
  3. No snaking.
  4. Paddle out wide of riders.
  5. Call "left" or "right" on a shared peak.

How much: 5 pictures

The rules

You show a picture or a wave in a video; the child names who has the wave and who broke a rule.

  1. Draw or pause a video on a wave with 2 to 4 surfers
  2. The child points to the surfer who has the wave
  3. Then names any rule broken
  4. 5 pictures each

Fair play: A grown-up must explain each answer in one sentence.

Points
1 point for the right surfer; 1 point for each rule break named.
Fouls
No points: pointing to the surfer furthest from the peak; naming a break that is not there; answering before looking at the whole picture
Win
More points after 5 pictures each.
