Show it · 1 minute
  1. Lie back with the ears under the water, tummy up, breathing slowly: a float.
  2. Upright in deep water, move the hands in small flat circles and kick gently: treading water.
  3. Say the rip rule aloud and show the "wave for help" signal: one arm up, waving.

Show it once from the front and once from the side, slowly. Then let your child try.

  1. Swim 50 m.
  2. Float on the back, ears under, breathing slowly, for 30 seconds.
  3. Tread water for 30 seconds.
  4. Say the rip rule: do not fight it, wade or swim along the beach, float and wave if tired.

Float and call

The rules

Float on the back for as long as you can, then wave and shout as if calling a lifeguard.

  1. Swim 50 m
  2. Float on the back, timed
  3. At the end, wave one arm and shout "help" clearly
  4. Then answer 3 rip questions

Fair play: A grown-up floats with the arms by the sides.

Points
1 point for every 10 seconds of float; 2 points for the swim; 1 point for each rip answer right.
Fouls
No points for that task: holding the side or the lane rope; standing on the bottom during the float; "swim straight back to the beach" as the rip answer
