  • A line on the wall (chalk or tape) at about knee height for the "tin"
  • A target square above it
  • The "T" on the floor (two lines crossing in the middle)

A ball; a line near the back of the court or a floor mark.

Warm up · 3 minutes

Three minutes to get warm.

Easy jogging on the spot, then arms and legs. How to warm up well is explained at workonfitness.com.

Show it · 1 minute
  1. Stand near the side wall and drive the ball straight along it, high on the front wall so it lands deep.
  2. Move to the T and touch it with a foot.
  3. Do a small hop (the split step) as the ball is hit, ready to move.

Show it once from the front and once from the side, slowly. Then let your child try.

  2. A game using one side of the court only.

Half-court game

The rules

Play rallies using only one side of the court; drives must land past the line.

  1. Play only in one half of the court, lengthways
  2. Serve with an easy drive
  3. Play out the point; first to 11
  4. After a game, the winner moves up a court or plays the next player

Fair play: A grown-up plays backhand only.

Points
1 point for each rally won; 1 bonus point for a winning drive that lands past the line.
Fouls
The point goes to the other player: the ball lands in the other half; no touch of the T after a shot; the ball hits the tin
