- Check the space and the kit.
- Get your child's attention first.
- Show it from two sides.
- Say one thing only.
- End on one that works.
Put the phone down where you can see it. Tap Next with your thumb, or use the arrow keys.
Is the space marked?
- A line on the wall (chalk or tape) at about knee height for the "tin"
- A target square above it
- The "T" on the floor (two lines crossing in the middle)
A ball; a line.
Three minutes to get warm.
Easy jogging on the spot, then arms and legs. How to warm up well is explained at workonfitness.com.
- Stand side by side; hit the ball to the wall, then step back to the T and give your partner room.
- The partner hits next, then steps back.
- Show a let: stand in the way, stop, call "let" and replay the point.
Show it once from the front and once from the side, slowly. Then let your child try.
- Play together for as many balls in a row as possible.
- Then only in the front half.
- Then the whole area, returning to the T after each shot.
How much: 5 rallies
Move to the T after every hit
Winner stays on
The rules
Play points; the winner of each point stays and the next player comes in.
- One player starts with an easy hit to the wall
- Take turns hitting until one misses
- The winner stays on; the loser swaps with the next player
- 10 minutes
Fair play: A grown-up must let the ball bounce twice before hitting.
- Points
- 1 point for each point won.
- Fouls
- The point goes to the other player: hitting out of turn; not moving off the T to let the other player in; swinging when someone could be hit (stop and call "let" instead: the point is replayed)
- Win
- The most points at the end.
- 3
- 6
- 10
A rally of 8 hits with the T recovery each time.
End on one that works. If it was hard today, finish with the easier version.
Well played.
