- Check the space and the kit.
- Get your child's attention first.
- Show it from two sides.
- Say one thing only.
- End on one that works.
Put the phone down where you can see it. Tap Next with your thumb, or use the arrow keys.
Is the space marked?
- A line on the wall (chalk or tape) at about knee height for the "tin"
- A target square above it
- The "T" on the floor (two lines crossing in the middle)
A racket; a ball; a floor mark for the T.
Three minutes to get warm.
Easy jogging on the spot, then arms and legs. How to warm up well is explained at workonfitness.com.
- Hold the racket as if shaking hands with it.
- From the side, take the racket back a little, swing smoothly and follow through toward the wall.
- After the hit, step back to the T mark and get ready.
Show it once from the front and once from the side, slowly. Then let your child try.
- The handshake grip.
- A short backswing, a smooth stroke and a follow-through.
- Hit the fed ball as a drive.
- Step back to the T mark.
How much: 10 drives, 3 rounds
Shake hands with the racket
Floor targets
The rules
Chalk zones on the floor worth 1 to 3 points; the drive must hit the wall and land in a zone.
- Chalk 3 zones on the floor: 1 point near, 3 points deep
- Feed one ball at a time
- Drive it off the wall into a zone, then return to the T
- First to 20 points
Fair play: A grown-up plays backhand only.
- Points
- 1 to 3 points for the zone the ball lands in.
- Fouls
- No points for that drive: the ball hits the wall below the line; no return to the T before the next feed; a swing with the feeder in front
- Win
- The first to 20 points, or beat your best number of drives to reach 20.
- 8
- 14
- 20
5 drives of 10 land above the line and the player returns to the T each time.
End on one that works. If it was hard today, finish with the easier version.
Well played.
