Is the space marked?
- A start line
- A straight lane
- A slalom of cones
- A loop
A lane; cones in a circle.
Three minutes to get warm.
Easy jogging on the spot, then arms and legs. How to warm up well is explained at workonfitness.com.
- Stand with the toes together and heels apart; push the heels out, then pull them in: you roll backward in a lemon shape.
- Look back over one shoulder as you go.
- On the circle, step the outer skate over in front of the inner one, then push the inner skate out from under.
Show it once from the front and once from the side, slowly. Then let your child try.
- Backward lemons, looking over the shoulder.
- The crossover turn round the circle.
- Both directions.
How much: 2 lengths backward and 10 crossovers each way
Look over your shoulder
Backward relay
The rules
Skaters race backward down the lane and touch the next skater.
- Each team lines up at the start of its lane
- The first skater skates backward to the far cone, turns and skates forward back to touch the next
- The first team to finish wins the race. 3 races
Fair play: A grown-up skates the whole race backward.
- Points
- 2 points for each race won; 1 point for each skater who did the backward length without stopping.
- Fouls
- The skater goes back to the start of the length: skating backward without looking over the shoulder; going into the other lane; setting off before the touch
- Win
- The most points after 3 races.
- 2
- 4
- 7
2 lengths of the lane backwards without stopping, and 5 crossovers each way.
End on one that works. If it was hard today, finish with the easier version.
Well played.
