Setup · 1 minute

Is the space marked?

  • The mat
  • The jack mark
  • A line of two discs
  • A bank object as the line target if outdoors

Mat, jack, bowls, a clear ditch.

Warm up · 3 minutes

Three minutes to get warm.

Easy jogging on the spot, then arms and legs. How to warm up well is explained at workonfitness.com.

3:00
Show it · 1 minute
  1. Draw a bowl gently to the jack.
  2. On the same line, roll one with more weight so it pushes another bowl away.
  3. From 4 to 6 m, drive a fast, straight bowl at a close bowl to knock it out.

Show it once from the front and once from the side, slowly. Then let your child try.

The skill · 12 minutes
  1. A draw, then the same line with more weight to push a bowl away.
  2. Alternate one firm shot and one draw so the weight changes each time.
  3. Knock a close bowl out from 4 to 6 m.

How much: 10 forcing shots and 10 draws

Firm weight, straight line

One bowl

The rules

Each player gets a single bowl to win the end.

  1. You set the head: the jack with the other player's bowl close to it
  2. The player has one bowl to win the end: draw closer, or knock the other bowl away
  3. Swap. 10 ends each

Fair play: A grown-up must win by drawing only, never driving.

Points
1 point for each end won with the single bowl.
Fouls
The bowl does not count: the anchor foot off the mat; bowling before the head is set; the bowl going into the ditch without touching anything
Win
More ends won after 10 each.
