Setup · 1 minute

Is the space marked?

  • The midline
  • A baulk line
  • Four shapes on the floor
  • A start line for the shuttle

A midline; an open circle.

Warm up · 3 minutes

Three minutes to get warm.

Easy jogging on the spot, then arms and legs. How to warm up well is explained at workonfitness.com.

Show it · 1 minute
  1. Three players hold hands in a line, knees bent, low.
  2. They step sideways and forward together, never letting go.
  3. They curve the line round a walking raider in a marked box.

Show it once from the front and once from the side, slowly. Then let your child try.

The skill · 8 minutes
  1. The chain: three or four defenders hold hands, or each holds a bib between them.
  2. Move together, low, knees bent.
  3. Close in on a walking raider in a marked box without the chain breaking.
  4. Then the raider jogs.

How much: 5 tries, then 2 games

Knees bent, stay low

Chain tag

The rules

The chain catches the others one by one; each caught player joins the chain.

  1. Two players hold hands as the chain; the others run inside the circle
  2. The chain tags a runner with a free hand; that runner joins the chain
  3. The last runner caught wins and starts the next chain

Fair play: A grown-up runs only with small steps.

Points
1 point for each runner the chain catches (shared by the chain); the last runner scores 3 points.
Fouls
The tag does not count: the chain breaks; pulling or grabbing a runner instead of tagging; a runner leaving the circle (that runner is caught)
Win
The most points after 3 games.
