Setup · 1 minute

Is the space marked?

  • The tape line
  • An en garde mark for the front foot
  • A wall target

None; numbers on paper.

Warm up · 3 minutes

Three minutes to get warm.

Easy jogging on the spot, then arms and legs. How to warm up well is explained at workonfitness.com.

Show it · 1 minute
  1. Stand in en garde and draw the target on yourself with a finger: neck to groin, front and back.
  2. Split it into four: high and low, inside (toward the other arm) and outside (away from the body).
  3. Move the hand to each line and say its number: 6, 4, 8, 7.
  4. Stand facing the child with both arms stretched: step back until the fingertips cannot touch. That is the safe distance.

Show it once from the front and once from the side, slowly. Then let your child try.

The skill · 8 minutes
  1. Learn the target: the body from the neck to the groin.
  2. The four lines: 6 high outside, 4 high inside, 8 low outside, 7 low inside.
  3. You call a number; the child shows the hand position.
  4. Stand at a distance where stretched arms cannot touch.

How much: 10 calls, 2 rounds
