- Check the space and the kit.
- Get your child's attention first.
- Show it from two sides.
- Say one thing only.
- End on one that works.
Put the phone down where you can see it. Tap Next with your thumb, or use the arrow keys.
Is the space marked?
- The start line
- Two lines of cones
- A square
- A stopping line for the braking game
A route an adult has ridden first; rules written with the children; a repair kit, a pump, first aid and a phone.
Three minutes to get warm.
Easy jogging on the spot, then arms and legs. How to warm up well is explained at workonfitness.com.
- Read the written rules together before setting off.
- Line up single file: one adult at the front, one at the back, two bike lengths between bikes.
- Ride 50 m slowly and stop: everyone checks the gap.
Show it once from the front and once from the side, slowly. Then let your child try.
- Single file with a gap of two bike lengths or more.
- Each rider looks after the one behind and waits.
- Look and signal early.
- No racing; both hands on the bars except to signal.
- Follow the road rules.
How much: 1 ride
One line, two bike lengths
Gap keeper
The rules
The back adult checks each stretch; every rider who kept two bike lengths scores.
- Split the route into stretches between stops
- Ride each stretch single file
- At each stop, the back adult names who kept the gap and signalled
- Count the riders at every stop
Fair play: The slowest rider sets the pace, right behind the front adult.
- Points
- 1 point for each rider who kept the gap on a stretch; 1 point for each stop where everyone is there.
- Fouls
- The rider scores nothing for that stretch: riding side by side on a road; racing another rider; not waiting for the rider behind
- Win
- The group beats its best score on the same route.
- 5
- 10
- 15
At every stop count the riders: everyone is in the group, 5 stops in a row.
End on one that works. If it was hard today, finish with the easier version.
Well played.
