- Check the space and the kit.
- Get your child's attention first.
- Show it from two sides.
- Say one thing only.
- End on one that works.
Put the phone down where you can see it. Tap Next with your thumb, or use the arrow keys.
Is the space marked?
- The start line
- Two lines of cones
- A square
- A stopping line for the braking game
The bike with the saddle low and pedals removed (or the left pedal off); a flat smooth space.
Three minutes to get warm.
Easy jogging on the spot, then arms and legs. How to warm up well is explained at workonfitness.com.
- Lower the saddle so both feet are flat on the ground when sitting.
- Sit, look ahead to the end of the path, fingers over the brakes.
- Walk the bike along while sitting, then push with both feet together.
- Lift both feet and roll for as long as the bike stays up.
Show it once from the front and once from the side, slowly. Then let your child try.
- Saddle low so both feet reach the ground.
- Scoot with both feet together, then one after the other.
- Try to glide with both feet off the floor.
- Stay seated, look up where you want to go, fingers over the brakes.
How much: 10 attempts, 4 rounds
Look at the end of the path
Cross the river
The rules
Mark two chalk lines; glide across without wet feet and widen the river as gliding improves.
- Draw two chalk lines 1 m apart: the river
- Scoot up to it and glide across with both feet up
- Each time the child crosses dry, move one line 50 cm farther
- 10 crossings
Fair play: A very young child starts with a river of 50 cm.
- Points
- 1 point for each dry crossing; 1 more point when the river is wider than 2 m.
- Fouls
- The crossing scores nothing: a foot touches the river; looking down at the front wheel instead of the far bank; getting off the saddle
- Win
- Beat your best from 10 crossings.
- 4
- 8
- 12
A glide with both feet off the floor for 3 seconds.
End on one that works. If it was hard today, finish with the easier version.
Well played.
