- Check the space and the kit.
- Get your child's attention first.
- Show it from two sides.
- Say one thing only.
- End on one that works.
Put the phone down where you can see it. Tap Next with your thumb, or use the arrow keys.
Is the space marked?
- A throwing or shooting spot 2 m from the wall or hoop
- Chalk lines for the lines game
- Two cones 5 m apart for dribbling
A hoop, a defender at the free-throw line.
Three minutes to get warm.
Easy jogging on the spot, then arms and legs. How to warm up well is explained at workonfitness.com.
- Stand at the shooting spot with the ball; the defender starts at the free-throw line.
- If the defender rushes up close: one or two dribbles past them, the other way.
- If the defender stays back: set your feet and shoot with BEEF.
Show it once from the front and once from the side, slowly. Then let your child try.
- The defender runs out, up close or stopping back.
- The attacker reads it.
- Up close: one or two dribbles the other way, then shoot.
- Stays back: shoot from a balanced stance.
- 8 shots a round.
How much: 8 shots, 4 rounds
Read first, then move
Decide
The rules
If the defender steps up, drive past; if the defender stays back, shoot.
- The defender passes the ball to the attacker and runs out, either close or stopping back
- The attacker decides: drive or shoot
- Play until the shot, or until the defender touches the ball
Fair play: A grown-up defender stops a full step short.
- Points
- 1 point for the right decision; 2 points for a basket, or 1 if the ball hits the rim.
- Fouls
- No points for that try: travelling; running into the defender; the defender touches the attacker (the attacker gets 1 point instead)
- Win
- More points after 8 tries each.
- 8
- 13
- 18
4 of 8 shots after a read land on or hit the rim.
End on one that works. If it was hard today, finish with the easier version.
Well played.
