Is the space marked?
- A throwing or shooting spot 2 m from the wall or hoop
- Chalk lines for the lines game
- Two cones 5 m apart for dribbling
A baseline and a ball each.
Three minutes to get warm.
Easy jogging on the spot, then arms and legs. How to warm up well is explained at workonfitness.com.
- Walk forward holding the ball.
- Jump stop: a small hop, landing on both feet at once, knees bent.
- Choose one foot as the pivot foot and keep its front on the floor.
- Step round with the other foot, turning, while the pivot foot only spins on the spot.
Show it once from the front and once from the side, slowly. Then let your child try.
- Walk or dribble forward while your arm is up.
- When the arm comes down, catch the ball and jump stop on both feet.
- Pivot on one foot, turning half round and back.
- 10 stops a round.
How much: 10 stops, 4 rounds
Land on both feet, knees bent
Stop on the line
The rules
Walk or dribble forward and stop on the signal; anyone off balance or moving the pivot foot steps back three; the first across the baseline wins.
- Everyone starts on a line 15 m from the baseline
- Arm up: walk or dribble forward
- Arm down: jump stop at once, then pivot half round and back
- The first across the baseline wins the race. 3 races
Fair play: A younger player may stop with one foot then the other (a stride stop).
- Points
- 1 point for every clean stop; 3 points for the first across the baseline.
- Fouls
- Three steps back: a stumble or a step after the stop; the pivot foot lifts or slides; not stopping on the signal
- Win
- The most points after 3 races.
- 4
- 7
- 10
8 of 10 stops balanced, with the pivot foot not moving.
End on one that works. If it was hard today, finish with the easier version.
