Setup · 1 minute

Is the space marked?

  • The net line across the middle of the strip
  • A service line on each side, 2 m from the net
  • A circle about 1 m wide in each far corner (chalk or tape)

A net or rope; a circle about 1 m wide chalked near the far back line. A racket and 20 shuttles.

Warm up · 3 minutes

Three minutes to get warm.

Easy jogging on the spot, then arms and legs. How to warm up well is explained at workonfitness.com.

Show it · 1 minute
  1. Stand near the net in a lunge, racket low.
  2. Swing up from below the waist in a U shape, elbow a little bent, wrist firm.
  3. Finish with the strings facing up. The shuttle goes high, over the head of someone on the other side.

Show it once from the front and once from the side, slowly. Then let your child try.

The skill · 10 minutes
  1. The player stands near the net. 10 lifts on the backhand side.
  2. 10 lifts on the forehand side.
  3. Now from the middle: lunge to each shuttle and lift it, then push back to the middle.

How much: 10 lifts each side, 4 rounds

Hit it up, not forward

High and deep

The rules

Five points for the circle, two for the back half, one for anywhere in the court.

  1. Each turn is 10 shuttles
  2. You throw low to the net; the player lifts
  3. Watch where each one lands and add up the points
  4. Then swap

Fair play: The grown-up lifts from 1 m farther from the net.

Points
5 points in the circle; 2 in the back half of the court; 1 anywhere else in the court.
Fouls
No points for that shuttle: it does not get over the net; it lands outside the court; in the lunge round, the player hits without lunging
Win
After one turn each, the player with more points wins.
