Put the phone down where you can see it. Tap Next with your thumb, or use the arrow keys.
Is the space marked?
- The start line
- A turning cone at 10 m and at 15 m
- A throwing line well behind the landing area
- Chalk or tape rows for scoring jumps and throws (1, 2, 3 points)
A throwing line, a foam javelin (or a rolled newspaper taped as a stick), cones at 10, 15 and 20 m.
Three minutes to get warm.
Easy jogging on the spot, then arms and legs. How to warm up well is explained at workonfitness.com.
- Feet a shoulder-width apart, the javelin above your shoulder, pointing forward.
- Take the throwing arm straight back, the javelin still pointing forward.
- Lean back so your chin, knee and toe make a line.
- Pull the arm through high over the shoulder and let go as it passes the shoulder, up and away.
Show it once from the front and once from the side, slowly. Then let your child try.
- Feet apart, javelin above the shoulder pointing forward.
- Arm back; lean back so chin, knee and toe line up.
- Throw: let go as the hand passes the shoulder, up and away. 10 standing throws.
- Then 5 throws from a 3-step approach, once the stance is steady.
How much: 10 standing throws, then 5 from 3 steps
Arm high, over your shoulder
Cone points
The rules
Past the first cone 1 point, the second 2, the third 3, from 10 throws.
- Everyone stands behind the line
- One thrower at a time, on "throw"
- When everyone has thrown, walk out together to fetch
- 10 throws each
Fair play: A younger thrower stands 3 m in front of the line.
- Points
- Past the 10 m cone 1 point, the 15 m cone 2, the 20 m cone 3; 1 extra point when the javelin lands point first.
- Fouls
- No points for that throw: throwing before "throw"; stepping over the line; the arm comes round from the side instead of over the shoulder
- Win
- The highest total from 10 throws.
- 8
- 15
- 22
5 of 10 throws land point first past the 10 m cone.
End on one that works. If it was hard today, finish with the easier version.
Well played.
