Setup · 1 minute

Is the space marked?

  • The start line
  • A turning cone at 10 m and at 15 m
  • A throwing line well behind the landing area
  • Chalk or tape rows for scoring jumps and throws (1, 2, 3 points)

5 sticks, canes or lines on the ground at equal gaps of 3 to 4 child steps; a turning cone 5 m past the last one.

Warm up · 3 minutes

Three minutes to get warm.

Easy jogging on the spot, then arms and legs. How to warm up well is explained at workonfitness.com.

Show it · 1 minute
  1. Run toward the first stick on the front of your feet.
  2. Run over it without jumping: just a slightly longer step.
  3. Count the steps between sticks aloud: "1, 2, 3, over".
  4. Lead over every stick with the same leg.

Show it once from the front and once from the side, slowly. Then let your child try.

The skill · 8 minutes
  1. Run over the 5 sticks on the front of the feet.
  2. Keep the same number of steps between each stick.
  3. Lead with the same leg over each stick.
  4. Run round the cone and walk back.

Rhythm relay

The rules

Two lanes of sticks side by side; a run only scores when the steps between all the sticks are the same.

  1. The first runner in each team runs over the sticks, round the cone, and back beside the sticks
  2. They touch the next runner's hand, who goes next
  3. 6 runs each

Fair play: A younger runner's sticks are a little closer together.

Points
1 point for each run with the same step count between every stick; 1 point to the team that finishes first.
Fouls
No point for that run: a different number of steps between sticks; jumping high over a stick; kicking a stick out of place
Win
The team with more points.
